“In this series we bring you our #FavouriteThings Holiday Gift Suggestions which we personally recommend”
IT ALL STARTED WITH A BIG BANG
On a cool spring morning in 1929, a small crew from Okanagan Falls set off to a deserted mining camp some 16 miles away from home. Their mission: to dismantle an old wooden church and bring it back to Okanagan Falls.
That’s how the idea began almost a century ago. There have been a number of changes and growth take place since then but over the years that Blasted Church has produced wine it remains as popular as ever.
We have no hesitation recommending the wines of Blasted Church. Their wines make great gifts and you will be pleased to have the wines grace your holiday table this season. A wide selection of wines for all of your sacred occasions.
2023 Pinot Gris
100% Pinot Gris
Wine making
Our 2023 Pinot Gris brings together fruit from west Oliver, north Summerland, and our estate vineyard on the Skaha Bench. The fruit was harvested on September 5, September 7, and September 14, respectively. Each block of Pinot Gris was hand harvested and whole cluster pressed to tank to cold settle before being racked to stainless steel tanks (85%) and neutral French oak barrels (15%) for long, cool fermentations. The different vineyard blocks gave us a beautiful range of wines to work with, resulting in a fresh, juicy, fruit driven Pinot Gris.
Tasting notes:
Colour: Golden straw.
Nose: Orchard fruit, peach, and honey supported by a floral notes.
Palate: Rich attack of pear, peach, apple, and lemon. The acidity balances out the richness through the mid-palate and carries into the nicely textured finish with flavours
that echo the attack.
Pairing: Roasted chicken, grilled fish, salty cheese.

2022 Hatfield’s Fuse
27% Gewürztraminer, 26% Viognier, 26% Orange Muscat, 8% Chardonnay, 4% Sauvignon Blanc, 4% Pinot Gris, 4% Chardonnay Musque, 1% Pinot Blanc
Wine making
The 2022 Hatfield’s Fuse is a blend of fruit from our estate vineyard in Okanagan Falls, as well as fruit from Oliver and Osoyoos. Each lot of fruit is harvested separately as it reaches a perfect balance between flavour, sugar, and acid to bring a specific character to the final blend. When it reaches the winery, 90% of the fruit is whole cluster pressed, with the remaining 10% being destemmed for a few hours of skin contact before being pressed to tank. Every fermentation is managed individually, giving the cellar team a broad palette with which to blend the final wine. The various components are selected to bring a piece to the whole. The Viognier brings richness and aromatic intensity, the Orange Muscat and Gewürztraminer contribute florals and spice, the Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Blanc are perfect partners for the natural acidity each brings to the blend. Every wine in the blend has a specific role to play, and in 2022 they are all performing their roles beautifully!
Tasting notes
Colour: Pale straw.
Nose: Orange blossom, rose, lychee, spicy muscat, apricot.
Palate: A balanced attack of apricot, pear, and lemon into the mid-palate where tropical fruit and more stone fruits carry through the refreshing finish. Pairing: Poached salmon, pork schnitzel, roasted chicken, or creamy pasta dishes.

2018 OMG (sparkling)
Pinot Blanc 60%, Chardonnay 40%
Okanagan Valley
Skaha Bench
Wine making:
The fruit for the 2018 OMG was sourced exclusively from our estate vineyard on the Skaha Bench. The Pinot Blanc (60%) contributes beautiful acidity and green apple character to the wine, while the Chardonnay (40%) brings richness, citrus, balance and ageability. Each vineyard block was hand harvested, whole cluster pressed, and fermented separately.
After several blending trials, the final composition of the base wine was assembled and put to bottle for secondary fermentation. As with any sparkling wine produced at Blasted Church Vineyards, the 2018 OMG was made in the traditional method where the secondary fermentation takes place in bottle prior to several years on lees. In the case of the 2018 OMG it was a minimum of four years on lees, before being hand riddled and disgorged.
Tasting notes
Colour: Golden straw.
Nose: Toasty brioche, creamy lemon curd, green apple, lime.
Palate: Richness on the attack followed by a wave of delicate, persistent bubbles. Lemon and lime, green apple, and toast. Beautiful acidity through the mid-palate and into a nicely textured finish.
Pairing: Poached salmon, pork schnitzel, roasted chicken, or creamy pasta dishes.

2022 Big Bang Theory
50% Merlot, 38% Syrah, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Pinot Noir, 1% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot
Wine making:
Our 2022 Big Bang Theory brings together fruit from our estate vineyard on the Skaha Bench with fruit from vineyards in Oliver and Osoyoos. Each lot of fruit is hand harvested as it reaches peak maturity and is brought into the cellar where the lots are vinified separately. The fermentations are managed intentionally to be lighter on extraction to preserve the fresh, juicy profile of the final blend.
After fermentation, each lot was put to barrel, primarily neutral oak, for MLF and aging for a minimum of 6 months before being assembled to create the final blend. Over the course of our blending trials, we decided to include a portion of 2021 Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon that had been in barrel for 14 months to add complexity while also helping to drive the richness and structure of the wine.
Tasting notes
Colour: Deep ruby.
Nose: Dark cherry, florals, cranberry, strawberry, mint, and plum.
Palate: Red berries, dried cranberries, and plum open the rich attack, with dark cherry carrying through the mid-palate as the fine-grained tannin builds into the juicy, balanced finish.
Pairing: A perfect pairing with almost anything from the grill. Sausages, burgers, or a pizza would all make for a terrific pairing.

2019 Cabernet Merlot
Cabernet Sauvignon 59%, Merlot 20%, 8% Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc 7%, Malbec 6%
Wine making:
Each individual lot of fruit was hand harvested separately at its optimal balance of sugar, acidity and tannic ripeness before being brought into the winery where the fruit was destemmed, but not crushed, and transferred to tanks for 5 day cold soaks before the fermentations kicked off. The separate fermentations were each managed according to their specific needs, with pumpovers ranging from 1 to 3 times daily depending upon the status and stage of the ferments.
After 18 to 28 days on skins, the wines were drained from the tanks directly to barrel for malolactic fermentation. The oak was French, American, and Hungarian, of which 20% was new, 4% was second-fill, 25% was third-fill, and 51% was neutral. The wines were in barrel for 14 months before being racked to tank for blending and back to barrel for an additional 6 months of aging before bottling.

2020 Syrah
100% Syrah
Wine making:
The Syrah was sourced from the Lloyd Vineyard (52%) on the West Bench of Osoyoos, the House Vineyard (33%) south of Oliver, and the Red Brick Vineyard (15%) on the East Bench of Osoyoos. The Lloyd Vineyard brings florals and elegance, the House Vineyard contributes a beautiful fruit and mineral profile, and the Red Brick Vineyard brings the savoury, gamey character that Syrah is known for.
The fruit was hand harvested before being destemmed to tank. A portion of the Syrah was fermented along with some Viognier skins, which serves to amplify the floral, pretty character of the wine. After a few days of cold soaking the fermentations kicked off and pumpovers were increased to match the needs of each fermentation. Wines were left on skins from 18 to 21 days. Free run wines were drained from each tank directly to barrel for malolactic fermentation. The oak was a mix of French, American, and Hungarian with 15% being new. The wine was in barrel for 14 months before being racked to tank and blended and put back to barrel for an additional 4 months of barrel aging.
Tasting notes
Colour: Deep ruby.
Nose: Crushed violet, blackberry, plum, blueberry, and black pepper.
Palate: A mix of dark and red berries and ripe plum on the attack. Fine-grained tannins build through the mid- palate and into the savoury chocolate and wild sage inflected finish. Beautiful acidity throughout keeps the wine fresh and balanced.
Pairing: Roasted lamb, duck, burgers or grilled sausages.
