Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Society needs your help
to win a new Land Rover rescue vehicle
Voting opens today (Oct. 3) for the annual Land Rover Defender Service Awards, and the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Society (VAMMR) is the only Canadian finalist in the Animal, Wildlife and Marine Mammal Welfare category. The recognition puts VAMMR in the running for $30,000 (USD) and a new Land Rover Defender 130. The rescue team is making a pitch for all the votes it can get from its friends and followers, from Oct. 3 to 19.
“Every year we respond to calls from remote areas with rough terrain, and animals’ lives depend on us getting there fast,” said Lindsaye Akhurst, senior manager of VAMMR. “The Land Rover Defender 130 would give us the capability to bring life-saving equipment where it’s needed most. Plus, the cash award would directly support the medical care our patients require.”
As Canada’s only dedicated marine mammal hospital, VAMMR responds to more than 300 emergencies each year, from stranded seal pups to orphaned sea otters to entangled sea lions. The independent registered charity relies on donations and public support to carry out its work. Its finalist spot was secured after submitting a video showcasing their work, which caught the attention of the judges.
“We’re proud to support the Land Rover Defender Service Awards this year, and even more excited to see a Vancouver finalist in the Animal, Wildlife, and Marine Mammal Welfare category,” said Raymon Hothi, general manager of Jaguar Land Rover Langley, member of OpenRoad Auto.
“The Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Society’s tireless work rescuing and rehabilitating seals and other marine life is truly inspiring. Our team has seen the great work they do firsthand, as the organization is one of both OpenRoad Auto and OpenRoad Foundation’s existing partners. A Defender 130 will definitely be of great assistance with their future work in the community.”
The overall winner will be determined by public voting on the Land Rover website between Oct. 3 and 19. Supporters are encouraged to vote once per day to help VAMMR bring this award home to Canada and help save more marine animals.
VAMMR is grateful for the support of: Jaguar Land Rover Langley, member of OpenRoad Auto and the OpenRoad Foundation, who are helping spread the word and champion the team’s effort to bring this award home to Canada.
