The Dance Centre’s popular Discover Dance! series features two exhilarating performances of African dance by Jacky Essombe. Born in Cameroon, Essombe is well known for her inspiring teaching and performances that express the cultural traditions and ancient rhythms of West and Central Africa. This interactive presentation features Essombe and her team of dancers and musicians in a program of high-energy dances, live drumming and singing that is steeped in the poetic imagery and wisdom of her ancestors, creating an experience to excite the eyes, engage the spirit and refresh the soul. There will be an artist talkback after each show.

Originally from Cameroon, Jacky Essombe grew up in Paris and now lives in Vancouver. She has toured in Canada, the United States and Europe and has appeared on television and radio in Canada and France. A cultural liaison and enthusiastic ambassador for African culture, Jacky is a professional dancer, dance teacher, storyteller, trainer, speaker and TV and radio show host. She uses dance as a medium to express life to its fullest and also as a journey to a higher level of consciousness. As a dance instructor and workshop presenter, she offers the experience of openness to the self through movement and body awareness, and a true cultural experience. For over fifteen years, Jacky has been presenting her African Healing Dance Workshop for Women throughout BC, as well as helping people of all body shapes and fitness experience reach their health and wellness goals with her popular Afro’Robics and Soukouss classes. She loves to share the traditions, history and culture of Africa, and the wisdom of her ancestors.
