Acclaimed Vancouver Chocolatier Marks 15 Titles in 17 Years at Prestigious Industry Awards Ceremony with Latest Win in ‘Best Patisserie’ Category
This year marks the 15th time in the last 17 years in which Haas has been honoured for an accolade at the ceremony. After winning eight straight titles for Best Last Course beginning in 2001, Haas went on to score four consecutive Pastry Chef of the Year awards and five since the category was launched in 2011, in addition to Best Bakery at last year’s edition of the awards.
“We change the name of this category every year — it’s been Bakery, it’s been Last Course — but under any name, Thomas Haas just keeps winning it. Evidently his skill with cakes and chocolate and tarts is the real deal,” stated the magazine in its May 2018 awards issue.
In winning the Gold award, Thomas Haas shares the spotlight with fellow nominees Beaucoup Bakery, Chez Christophe, Temper and Thierry.
Haas honed the time-honoured art of handcrafting chocolates and pastries while growing up in his great-grandfather’s kitchen in Germany before earning his credentials as a Master Pastry Chef in Michelin-starred restaurants across Europe and North America. He opened his namesake chocolaterie and pâtisserie in North Vancouver in 2004 and a second location in Kitsilano in 2009.
“No matter what happens, it’s still nerve-racking every year and winning it is always exciting,” said Haas at the awards ceremony alongside his wife and business partner, Lisa. “But what really matters are the customers who we serve every day and the amazing people on our team. It’s a shared passion that fuels us, helps us succeed and keeps our customers coming back, and for that I am truly grateful.”
The Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards are judged by a panel of leading culinary experts and critics and handed out at a formal award show at the Sheraton Wall Centre in Vancouver. A full list of winners from the 2018 edition of the annual awards is available at www.vanmag.com.
Thomas Haas products are exclusively available at both his Kitsilano and North Vancouver cafés as well as select leading hotels, retailers and restaurants across North America. www.thomashaas.com
