2016 was the 21st anniversary of the Champagne and Caviar event held at the Vancouver Rowing Club in Stanley Park to benefit amateur sport.

This evening of bubbly showcased sparkling wines from many countries and regions other than France, including BC, Italy, New Zealand, Nova Scotia, Spain and California.

The Canadian contingent included wines from:

Noble Ridge                           The One                     BC

Thornhaven                           Infusion                      BC

Elephant Island                     Pink Elephant             BC

Tantalus                                 Blanc de Noir             BC

Blue Mountain                       Gold Label Brut         BC

Okanagan Crush Pad                        Narrative XC              BC

Benjamin Bridge                                Brut                            NS

There was a good selection of Italian Prosecco and Spanish Cava with names both familiar and new. Some of the better-known Champagne names included, Barons de Rothschild, Billicart and Pol Roger.

Likewise there was quite the selection of caviar – black, orange, yellow and green, very interesting to say the least, and all proved perfect foils for the sparkling wines.

There were many wines that I especially enjoyed:

BC

Noble Ridge ‘The One’

Tantalus Blanc de Noir

California

Schramsberg 2013 Blanc de Blancs

Schramsberg 2007 Blanc de Noirs.

France

Billecart Salmon Brut

Montaudon

Taittinger Prestige Rosé

Italy

Ferrari Brut Rosé

New Zealand

Sophora Sparkling Cuvee

Spain

Segura Viudas Gran Reserva Heredad Cava

However, the very best of the bubbles I tasted that evening were all French – the Pol Roger Cuvee de Brut Reserve, Thienot’s Brut Champagne and the Bauchet Premier Cru Signature.

Needless to say, there were many wines that I didn’t get to so my apologies for any outstanding omissions. I was disappointed that by the time I got to some of the tables some popular wines were already gone such as the Benjamin Bridge from Nova Scotia and the Chandon’s Blanc de Noirs from California.

This proved to be a lovely evening at a beautiful venue. Be sure to mark your calendar for next year’s event and follow Liberty’s web page for other upcoming special events at www.LibertyWineMerchants.com
