Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wow judges at Decanter World Wine Awards
and International Wine & Spirit Competition
The wine world is buzzing about Liquidity Wines thanks to the Okanagan winery’s recent wins in international competitions renowned for rigorous judging and strong submissions. The Decanter World Wine Awards and the International Wine & Spirit Competition are two of the industry’s biggest and most influential competitions – and in both, Liquidity bested local and international competitors by scooping
At the 2018 Decanter World Wine Awards, Liquidity’s 2016 Pinot Noir Estate caught the judges’ attention from among more than 17,200 entries. The silver medal-winner is light-to-medium bodied with alluring aromas of cherry, raspberry, Earl Grey tea and mocha. Flavours of cherry, redcurrant, vanilla and spice lead to a lingering, silky finish. The wine is complex enough to be enjoyed on its own, though also pairs well with ostrich tartare, cured meats, roasted duck breast and mushroom pizza.
Earning recognition of any kind at the Decanter World Wine Awards is coveted among wine producers, as the awards are trusted internationally as an unrivalled source of wine recommendations. The judging panel is made up of experts from across the globe, including Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers, who taste each submission and award points; a small fraction of submissions earn enough points to be granted medals. Wines awarded silver medals are considered “very accomplished, with impressive complexity.”
Liquidity’s winning streak continued at the 2018 International Wine & Spirit Competition, where the winery’s 2015 Pinot Noir Equity and 2016 Chardonnay Estate won over the judges with each earning a silver medal. The medium-bodied Pinot Noir has a toasty nose with aromas of confit blackberry, cherry, lavender, white pepper and vanilla; bright acidity and suede tannins open up to flavours of raspberry, wild blueberry, leather and vanilla. The wine pairs well with leg of lamb in juniper sauce, mushroom risotto and cheese plates. For a fuller-bodied white selection, the Chardonnay is deliciously creamy with tropical aromas of pineapple, guava and lemon curd mingling with subtle notes of vanilla and toasted marshmallow; on the palate, the wine tastes of peach, Asian pear, blood orange, pineapple and hints of spice. Perfect culinary complements include pasta carbonara, scallops in citrus butter sauce, or simply with a big bowl of buttered popcorn enjoyed in front of a favourite Netflix show.
Throughout its 49 years, the International Wine & Spirit Competition has achieved recognition as the world’s original and most prestigious wine and spirits awards. The competition is distinguished by a complex two-stage judging process, during which more than 400 experts sample entries using the double-blind tasting method before each wine undergoes a detailed chemical and microbiological analysis. The entire process takes seven months with submissions received from nearly 90 countries.
“We are honoured that Liquidity’s wines have been recognized by two of the world’s leading competitions – particularly given the overwhelming number of submissions from incredibly strong contenders here in Canada and internationally,” says Ian MacDonald, owner of Liquidity Wines. “Winemaking is such an intricate, complex and rewarding art form, and all of us at Liquidity are gratified to be recognized for doing something we love so much.”
Liquidity Wines’ 2016 Chardonnay Estate and 2016 Pinot Noir Estate are each priced at $26 (plus tax) and available in the winery’s tasting room and online. They can also be found at private wine shops and restaurants throughout the Okanagan and Lower Mainland.
