Fish for the Future, Healthy Salmon for Generations

Tofino’s annual family friendly catch-and-release fishing tournament supports the Clayoquot Sound watershed, raising funds to protect wild salmon and conserve the environment

Tofino Resort + Marina is pleased to announce the 4th annual Fish for the Future Tournament, September 23-25, 2022. Founded soon after the resort opened in 2017, this important initiative brings critical awareness to the state of wild salmon stocks while raising much needed funds for the conservation and protection of the Clayoquot Sound watershed.

The Fish for the Future Tournament is a fun, family friendly catch-and-release fishing tournament that has become an annual tradition for many. The event program includes live music, courtyard festivities, a silent auction, music bingo and an awards ceremony with amazing prizes. 100% of funds raised are committed to the Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Trust, a registered charity that supports a number of programs dedicated to restoration, enhancement, research and more. Since the fund’s inception in 2019, Fish for the Future has raised over $400,000 and granted over $100,000 to help aid salmon projects, which includes a personal $20,000 donation from Tofino Resort and Marina’s ownership. In an effort to support the future fishermen and women of the Clayoquot Sound, kids under 12 fish for free, while the regular entry fee is $105 per person.

“Wild salmon are essential to our coastal ecosystem, they connect and feed the ocean and forest and provide our food security as British Columbians,” says tournament founder and Tofino Resort + Marina co-owner and managing partner, Willie Mitchell. “Our event draws families and the fishing community together to raise funds to ensure healthy wild salmon stocks for future generations. Fish for the Future is now more than a tournament, it’s a year-round conservation initiative for the waters we live beside, and make a living from. When you love your backyard as much as we do, you do what you can to protect it.”

Tofino Resort + Marina is investing in various sustainability initiatives:

All guests who eat, stay or play at the property, including participants in Marine Adventure Centre activities, contribute 2% of their bill to sustainable initiatives – 1% to the Tribal Parks Allies which supports the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation in the restoration and guardianship of their lands and 1% to the Fish for the Future Fund which supports the protection and conservation of wild salmon populations in Clayoquot Sound.

The “Drink Like a Fish” campaign, a partnership between Tofino Brew Co. and the resort’s 1909 Kitchen + Bar contributes $1 for every Tofino Blonde Ale sold to the Fish for the Future Fund.

The resort is certified as an Ocean Friendly business by Surfrider Pacific Rim for its work in plastic reduction, participating in The Den refillery soap and cleaning product program and eliminating foam docks from the marina.

1909 Kitchen + Bar also received the highest “green” level certification from Vancouver Island Green Business Collective for efforts in sustainable building operations, waste reduction, water conservation, local purchasing, social and transportation initiatives.
