BOULEVARDIER

Meet the Boulevardier, a classic whisky drink made The Glenlivet style. Mixing whisky, Campari and sweet vermouth, it’s the rich, full-bodied twin of the Negroni. We make ours with sweet, spiced scotch to warm you up on chilly nights.

Pronounced: Bool-vahr-dee-ay

INGREDIENTS
l oz The Glenlivet 15 Year Old
40 ml Campari
20 ml Sweet Vermouth

METHOD
Add all ingredients to a Mixing Vessel over Cubed Ice.
Stir for 10-15 seconds.
Strain into a Rocks Glass over Cubed Ice or strain into a Chilled Couple.
Garnish with a Zest of Orange.
Serve.

GARNISH
A classic Boulevardier is garnished with a twist of orange peel. The subtle oils from the zest enhances the bittersweet flavour of the cocktail, giving it a timeless look. If orange isn’t your thing, try swapping for a lemon twist or sweet cherry.

What’s the best Vermouth for a Boulevardier cocktail?
A quality sweet vermouth is the best ingredient for a Boulevardier. It’s an integral part of the drink’s flavour, so pick a liqueur that balances bitterness with fruity sweetness.

The cocktail history of The Boulevardier
We can thank an American writer for the creation of the Boulevardier. The classic cocktail was a signature drink of Erskine Gwynne, the editor of a monthly magazine with the same name. The Boulevardier first appeared in print in Harry’s 1927 bar guide, Barflies and Cocktails. Translating to ‘a wealthy, fashionable socialite’, you could say that Erskine also named the cocktail after himself.

THE GODFATHER

The Godfather is a drink you can’t refuse. With just two ingredients, it’s a simple recipe. But it’s one that’s packs a punch in flavour. Sweet, almond flavoured Amaretto combines with spiced, nutty notes of scotch to create a sophisticated serve. Mix the two together and – badda-bing – you’re in business.

INGREDIENTS
The Glenlivet 15 Year Old 45 ml
Amaretto 15 ml
Zest of Orange, Maraschino Cherry for Garnish

METHOD
Add all ingredients to a Mixing Vessel over Cubed Ice.
Stir for 10-15 seconds.
Strain into a Rocks Glass over Cubed Ice.
Garnish with a Zest of Orange and a Maraschino Cherry.
Serve.

VARIATIONS
A classic Godfather cocktail is a simple mix of whisky and Amaretto. But if that isn’t quite up to scratch, or you feel like getting creative, then try your hand at one of these variations.

Swap Amaretto for cream to make a Godchild; a rich, dessert like twist. Try with The Glenlivet Caribbean Reserve for a hit of fruity sweetness that compliments the nutty almond liquour. Create a smoky Godfather cocktail by replacing 7.5ml of whisky with peated scotch.

Other variations include a Godmother (made with vodka) and The Boss (made with bourbon)

What is the best scotch for a Godfather cocktail?
There’s no hard rules when it comes to the best scotch for a Godfather. The choice is up to the drinker. With that said, we love a single malt scotch for a slightly honeyed smokiness. We use The Glenlivet 15 Year Old, a distinctively rich and golden expression with traces of sweet almond and spice. The perfect match for Amaretto.

The cocktail history of The Godfather
Two guesses where this cocktail gets its name. Appearing in bar menus since the 1970s, the simple yet sophisticated serve is named after the Oscar-winning film ‘The Godfather’. Perhaps the reason being it was Marlon Brando’s favourite drink. Like the movie, it’s punchy, classic and tastes best when it’s cold.

VIEUX CARRÉ

If an Old Fashioned or Manhattan is your usual, then you’ll adore a Vieux Carré cocktail. Sweet yet bitter, smoky yet smooth and undeniably elegant, this complex cognac and whisky cocktail may require a few ingredients but each slow sip is more than worth the effort. This recipe calls for our golden 15 Year Old scotch, aged in French oak casks to compliment the Vieux Carré’s origins in New Orlean’s French Quarter.

INGREDIENTS
The Glenlivet 15 Year Old Whisky 25 ml
Martell VS 25 ml
Sweet Vermouth 25 ml
Benedictine 10 ml
Peychaud’s Bitters 2 dashes
Angostura Bitters 1 dash

METHOD
Add all ingredients to a Mixing Vessel over Cubed Ice.
Stir for 10-15 seconds.
Strain into a Rocks Glass over Cubed Ice or a Chilled Coupe.
Garnish with a Zest of Lemon.
Serve.

HOW TO MAKE A PERFECT VIEUX CARRE
There’s quite a few ingredients that go into a Vieux Carre. But thankfully the making is more than simple. The trick is to use quality ingredients that are slowly sitred over cubed ice for a chilled, fresh serve. Don’t forget the lemon peel garnish to elevate the drink’s bittersweet taste and elegant look.

What is the best cognac for a Vieux Carre?
A smooth, aromatic cognac is the best match for the other ingredients in a Vieux Carre. Our recipe calles for Martell VS, a fine, rich blend that marries fruity notes of plum and apricot with the sweet almond spice of The Glenlivet 15 Year Old.

The cocktail history of the Vieux Carre
The Vieux Carre is a classic New Orleans creation. Literally meaning “old square” in French, the Vieux Carre is named after the city’s French Quarter where it was invented in the 1930s. The man responsible was Walter Bergeron, head bartender at what would become the Hotel Monteleone’s iconic Carousel Bar. Today you’ll find it on cocktail menus worldwide, but if you find yourself in New Orleans, don’t pass on an opportunity to sip a Vieux Carre where the likes of Ernest Hemmingway and Truman Capote once socialised.

What’s the difference between a Vieux Carre and Manhattan?
The Vieux Carre and a Manhattan both use sweet vermouth rather than the sugar or simple syrup found in an Old Fashioned. However what makes a Vieux Carre stand out is the addition of smooth, fruity cognac and aromatic Benedictine that come together to enhance the whisky’s complex flavour profile.

VALLEY OF THE BEES

In September, the rolling moorland turns purple with heather flowers. This is one of the Scottish Highlands most beautiful sights, with bees buzzing as they meander from flower to flower, building up their stores of honey. The same bees have been flying through the fields of barley, with their quest for nectar pollinating the plants that contribute to our whisky.

This connection between different parts of the same ecosystem is represented in this scotch honey cocktail recipe, where heather, honey and The Glenlivet 15 year old whisky are gently stirred together to honour the bees and their vital work.

This honey whisky mixer is utterly refreshing on a summer afternoon.

INGREDIENTS
The Glenlivet 15 Year Old 50 ml
Heather Honey Syrup 7.5 ml
Aromatic Bitters 1 dash
Lemon
Orange
Heather Flowers (for the Syrup) 20 g
Heather Honey (for the Syrup) 300 ml

METHOD
Add all the ingredients to a mixing glass with ice and stir until chilled.
Strain over a large ice ball into a glass.
Twist the oils of lemon and orange peel to finish.

HEATHER HONEY SYRUP
Heather honey, taken from hives where the bees feed on heather flowers has a unique floral flavour.

Soak the heather flowers in 100ml of boiling water for five minutes.
Add the liquid and the flowers the heather honey and stir until mixed.
Leave the mixture to infuse further for 24 hours, strain through a sieve to remove the heather.
The water means the honey will mix into cocktails more easily and will also be easier to measure.

THE GLENLIVET 15 Year Old

The Glenlivet 15 Year Old single malt scotch whisky gets its distinctive rich and exotic character from a process of selective maturation in which a proportion of the spirit is matured in French oak casks.

In fact, we at The Glenlivet were one of the first to use French oak for making whisky, a technique that has since been imitated the world over. The Limousin oak we use is cut in France’s Dordogne region, where it’s often used to mature cognacs. Its low density allows the whisky to sink deep into the wood, and we carefully control how long the whisky matures in the casks so as not to overpower the desired result: a unique, pleasing spiciness.

The 15 Year Old single malt scotch whisky is deep gold in colour, and leaves behind traces of sweet almond and spice. The Glenlivet 15 Year Old was selectively finished in French oak casks.
