Dinner and a Cruise
Sunday night I ventured out to the District to try their new Sunday Night Suppers feature. Hopping on the Seabus to get there took hardly any time at all and makes the trip to the North Shore a bit more fun.
The District is a great little bistro style restaurant featuring the dishes of Chef Paul Mon-Kau. A cozy spot with an open kitchen and seating indoors as well as outside on a private patio. We opted for the patio as it was a lovely evening and the Sunday Night Suppers are available if you order before 6 pm and we had arrived early just to try out this new menu option.
The inaugural Sunday Night Supper was a three course meal starting with artisanal greens and a tangy pesto vinaigrette. The second course was a full pound of Gulf Island mussels in a leek, white wine & cream broth with crostini and aioli on the side for soaking up all the tasty broth. The mussels were plumb and delicious. Perfection in a pot, accompanied by a dish of thrice fried frites lightly sprinkled with paprika. Absolutely the best fries I’ve had in Vancouver. We opted for a Pentage pinot gris but the dish would have paired equally well with any one of the number of beers available, both bottled and on tap.
Dessert was so good, in fact it was too good so that while chatting with Chef Paul I just plunged in and forgot to take a picture, sorry about that you’ll just have to take my word for it when I tell you the delightfully rich “creme brûlée” cheesecake with a crunchy dark brown caramel topping was a hit.
Chef Paul was inspired by the European mainstay, the table d’hôte, to create Sunday Night Suppers. Featured earlier in the evening to entice diners looking for a great meal with good value and a chance to experience some of the District’s most popular dishes.
We really enjoyed our evening and the opportunity to get to know Chef Paul who is an amazing cook, savvy businessman, very well traveled, bringing his ideas and local ingredients to the table.
