Fort Berens Part I

OK, I am well acquainted with Fort Berens wines and have been a big fan pretty much since they opened, however I have never visited the winery before and have heard great things about the building and their restaurant so it was time for a visit.

After a scenic drive through Whistler and Pemberton we got to Lillooet and headed to the winery, located right across the river. We decided to have lunch before tasting the latest vintages and were very impressed to say the least. Executive chef Dylan Ross operates the Ponderosa Kitchen.   I never expected to see items like Steak Tartar, Rabbit, Lamb or Spot Prawn Pasta on a menu in a small town.

The Kitchen also offers nine wines by the glass so you can find the perfect lunch pairing or just ask your server for a recommendation. Most of their ingredients are locally sourced and many come from Spray Farm Creek Farm just a short distance south of the winery. There are also options for those who are vegan or have food allergies.

We sat outside, undercover and felt very relaxed soaking in the stunning view and the tranquility of the area. The food exceeded expectations and was a bargain. Mitch, our server, was helpful and attentive. If I lived in the area, I’d eat here on a regular basis.

The wines we sampled in the glass walled tasting room were all well crafted and impressive. My two favourites, if I have to limit myself, were the Chardonnay and the Cabernet Franc, though truth be told, if I had room in my cellar, I would have left with several of each. What surprised me was how much my son enjoyed the Chardonnay since he has usually said, “I don’t like Chardonnay.” Fort Berens made a believer out of him.

Owners Rolf de Bruin and Heleen Pannekoek can be very proud of their operation. Be sure you put Fort Berens on your list of places to visit and be sure to allow time to have a meal.

You can find Fort Berens at 1881 Hwy 99, just north of Lillooet. Check them out at www.fortberens.ca
