Accolades for Devil Proof Malbec

•Robert Parker called the 2012 vintage, “the finest Malbec from California I have ever tasted… which could easily rival the best from high elevation vineyards in Argentina” (12/2013)

•Virginie Boone said the 2013 vintage, (95 Points, Editors Choice) “is even better than the prior version (2012), which is almost unimaginable, but there it is. Floral and as tempting as blueberry pie, this concoction from Jesse Katz is velvety smooth and silky on the palate. White chocolate dances around its edges, along with a strong suggestion of cigar, which may perhaps come from the fine lady on the label” (07/2016)

•Wine Spectator declared the ’13, “The highest rated 100% Malbec from California, ever” (07/2016)

•James Suckling on 2013 vintage, wrote, (93 Points) “Lots of rich and delicious fruit with blackberry and blueberry character. Yet it shows form and intensity with chewy tannins” (06/2016)

The Full Story

AmoVino Distributors Ltd , co-founded and directed by Jessica Luongo and Marisa Varas, has hit the B.C wine scene with premium, cult-classic brand, ‘Devil Proof’ Malbec 2013, highly acclaimed and awarded, with hopes to showcase the potential versatility of Californian wine by choosing soil specific sites. ‘Devil Proof’ uniquely express Jesse’s well-honed, exquisite terroir-driven winemaking techniques, and authentic, time honoured practices. “I’m fascinated by that concept of terroir and it drives my winemaking. Devil Proof is very specific in the sense that it focuses on the site. I want it to evoke conversation and thought when people drink the wine” Jesse tells.

But what about the label?! An homeage to a favourite family vacation in Cuba, the memory of which vividly came to mind while Jesse tasted through the barrels.

Jesse is also the winemaker for Aperture Cellars, a passion project collaboration between world re-known photographer Andy Katz, whose shots are also featured on the labels, and his winemaker son, soon to hit the market with AmoVino.

More about Jesse Katz

Born and raised in Boulder, Colorado, Jesse Katz is a ‘salt of the earth’ hard worker. By the time he received a full scholarship to Fresno State University, obtaining a degree in Enology and a minor in Chemistry, he had travelled to more than 60 countries, and had also worked 6 harvests in 3 years with some of the worlds top winemakers, including Hans Vinding-Diers of Bodega Noemia, Paul Hobbs of Viña Cobo, Bob Foley of Hourglass and Andy Erickson of Screaming Eagle. Devil Proof Malbec is a culmination of Jesse’s life experience and passion. As the saying goes, “The devil is in the details“.

Devil Proof Malbec 2013 technical information

In 2013 Alexander Valley experienced one of the greatest vintages in its history. With virtually no rain since December ’12, the growing season began early. “Because we dry farm, the lack of spring rain kept berry size the smallest we have ever seen at this site. This increased concentration with a lengthy growing season. We were able to achieve very fine, ripe tannins with bright fresh acidity. Almost perfect” Jesse says. The 2013 vintage of ‘Devil Proof’ Malbec is just the second vintage, but his wines echo a timeless elegance that is captivating the hearts and cellars of serious wine geek’s and collectors. There are few sites in the world where a single block, on a single vineyard site can contain all of the unique components of an exceptional wine. This rare gem is Devil Proof’s Block #17 at Farrow Ranch, in Alexander Valley, Sonoma County. Cultivated on south-western slopes, adjacent to a steep bluff that creates great air flow through the vineyard and contributes to the 40 degree diurnal temperature swing that gives the wine it’s great acidity – crucial for age ability. Volcanic, gravelly loam soils are perfectly suited for this Bordeaux varietal, which is 100% hand harvested and cold soaked for 7 days extraction before cool fermentation with native yeasts. 21-day temperature controlled fermentation with extended maceration takes place before going in new French oak barrels for 22 months, sur lees, where the wine undergoes full malolactic fermentation in barrel. 10 barrels were made, bottled unfined, unfiltered and un-acidified. This vintage sold out at the winery in 3 days, and is no longer available except through AmoVino Distributors. Contact info@nullamovino.ca for ordering details.
