New Zealander Matt Dumayne has lived in the Okanagan Valley since 2011. In 2012 he joined Okanagan Crush Pad, makers of Haywire and Narrative wines and spirits, where he oversees production as chief winemaker. In a very short time he has established a reputation for himself as one of the premium wine producers in the Okanagan, and has indeed made his mark on the region’s wine scene.
Dumayne has been instrumental in the evolution of Haywire and Narrative wines, championing natural winemaking practices. Okanagan Crush Pad wines are made using organically farmed grapes in state-of-the-art concrete tanks, using native yeasts and minimal intervention. His wines are having a growing impact, as more and more consumers understand and embrace them for their purity and simplicity.
Dumayne also oversees the winemaking for Okanagan Crush Pad’s stable of custom-crush winemaking clients, helping new small lot producers to get their start, including Coolshanagh and Mirabel Vineyards.
The winery team is excited to see Dumayne receive this recognition. Winery co-owner Christine Coletta says, “in his off-work time, Matt is very passionate about cooking, and approaches it as he does winemaking. He loves nothing more than preparing feasts for friends and coworkers, and is very deserving in this award.”
“Our team is very proud of him,” Coletta continues. “And we send congratulations to all the other foodie finalists representing Western Canada.”
