Vancouver International Film Festival 2019: Opening Gala “Guest of Honour”

Vancouver International Film Festival 2019 – Opening Gala

“Guest of Honour”

Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan’s new film, “Guest of Honour” is a complex family drama which takes viewers on an elaborate journey as a father, Jim (David Thewlis) and daughter, Veronica (Laysla De Oliverira) try to understand and make peace with the events that have shaped their lives.

Told in a series of flashbacks, the intricate details of their lives begin to emerge. Both are struggling with their own secrets and their inability to understand the perspective of the other. How did Jim end up being a health inspector and why was Veronica in jail?

Excellent cinematography and a superb cast add depth and interest to the various plot threads; perhaps the most unusual, but very important, character is Benjamin Bunny, the much loved rabbit that Veronica received from her father when she was a young girl. A tangled journey of love and learning, “Guest of Honour” is well worth savouring.
