Some of Canada’s most celebrated wines are made in the Heart of Wine Country™, at a handful of small wineries in BC’s Okanagan Valley, several of which are family owned and operated. The wines can be hard to find at local liquor stores and best ordered online direct from the wineries.
After a two year hiatus it was wonderful to be able to attend this event with represenatives from the wineries of the Okanagan Falls and Skaha Lake Winery Association.
There were so many excellent wines available for tasting and I did my best to get around to each table, choosing to taste mostly white wines as time permitted. My notes tend to be a bit brief given how many wines I tasted so I have also included the winerys’ tasting notes from their websites.
The following wineries participated in this all-star event in April, 2022 and I had the opportunity to taste most, not all, that were on offer:
Black Market Wine Company
Black Market Omerta 2021
Delicious scents of fresh strawberries, stone fruit, fruit salad and floral aromas. On the palate ripe strawberries with good minerality, some tannin but light with good acidity.
Wine Profile
Winemaker Notes
A crisp, dry Provençale-style rosé made from 100% Cabernet Franc. The delicate pale pink hue of this rosé perfectly disguises the intensity that lies within. Hand-picked and hand sorted, the wine was gently whole-cluster pressed over a 4-hour period. A 10-day period of Stabulation followed, where the juice was chilled, left on the gross lees and stirred twice daily before the onset of fermentation. Only free-run juice made its way into this wine.
Tasting Notes
Sensual, plush and luscious, this fruit-forward wine has amazing depth and complexity. Aromas of strawberry-rhubarb pie and red cherries lead the way to a creamy and unctuous palate of apricot, yellow plum, pomegranate and strawberry compote. Crisp acidity shines from the entry through the long finish, with only the faintest hint of white pepper.
Food Pairings
Refreshing on its own, our rosé is also a highly versatile wine on the table. The textural complexity, rich flavour and crisp acidity enables Omertà to pair well with many different dishes, like fresh bocconcini salad, grilled Merguez sausages, or creamy goat cheese crostini. Want to see the versatility of this rosé? Try it with a sous vide duck breast, finished in a hot skillet and served with a pink peppercorn sauce.
Black Market Unsanctioned Series Pinot Blanc 2020
With both scents and light flavours of predominately peaches with a hint of vanilla. I found this wine to have an oaky flavour but with good acidity and an off-dryness.
Wine Profile
Winemaker Notes
The 2020 Pinot Blanc is made with grapes from our Conviction Ridge estate vineyard in Kaleden. With yields of less than two tons per acre, the grapes show incredible depth of flavour and aroma. Hand-harvested early in the morning to preserve the acidity, the grapes were lightly pressed and then the juice was fermented in neutral barrels. After fermentation, the wine was aged 5 months in barrel, with batonnage (stirring of the lees) twice a month to build body and texture.
Tasting Notes
This wine has aromas of white peach, yellow plum, mango and freshly baked pie crust. Look for richness on the palate, with notes of peach, nectarine, mango and a bit of grannysmith apple. The texture is beuatifully balanced between the lively acidity and the creaminess and length of the finish.
Food Pairings
This is a highly versatile wine on the table. The textural complexity, medium body and crisp acidity enables our Pinot Blanc to pair well with many different dishes. Try it with a warm artisan brie cheese, or with Potato-Crusted Salmon.
This vintage is Sold Out on the winery website.

Mayhem Wines
Mayhem 2021 Rosé
It’s no secret that I am a big fan of Mayhem wines, and who wouldn’t be with quality wines at excellent prices.
Delightful scents of plums and Italian prune plum mingling on the nose. With acidity off the charts! A slight hint of tannins with medium body and a fruity finish.
This 100% Merlot based rosé hand-harvested on September 16th from Ryegrass Road Vineyard in Oliver. The fruit was completely crushed and destemmed directly into the press. It was then gently pressed over a 3 hour period where only the best juice was taken. Racked off its heavy lees and fermented slowly down to dryness over a 16 week period with maximum fermentation temperatures only reaching 10C to preserve the delicate aromatics. This wine’s final blend comprises of 11% neutral French Oak barriques, 80% aged in stainless-steel tank and 9% Stainless steel barrique. The long, extremely cool primary fermentation allowed this wines freshness and clean, crisp flavours to shine through
TASTING NOTES
Exhibiting a slight peach colour. Sage brush spice notes dominate the nose, along with strawberries & cream and tangy orange zest aromas. A mineral based palate that is well balanced shows off layers of berry fruits, and a depth of flavour. Bright and racy, this Rosé is great for the upcoming summer months!
PAIRS WELL WITH:
Charcuterie, olive tapenade, grilled eggplant and relaxing in the garden.
Mayhem 2021 Pinot Gris
Herbaceous with scents of stone fruits, peaches. The wine is smooth and light than I expected but with good body. Flavours of Meyer lemons. This one was very nice.
The grapes were handpicked based on flavour and natural acid levels from Ryegrass Road Vineyard in Oliver on September 17th. They are 2009 planting of clone 53. We use a hands-off winemaking approach. It was then whole bunch pressed, followed by a long, cool 7-week fermentation, which started in stainless steel before moving to 7% new French barriques, 69% seasoned puncheons, 24% seasoned barriques. The wine was left on the lees for six months to create complexity, then blended and filtered before bottling.
TASTING NOTES:
This bone-dry Pinot Gris is grounded and approachable. Laced with white stone fruit & orchard fruit it finishes with a creamy minerality and Caribbean spices. Weighty and texture driven, this Pinot Gris is fresh, crisp, flavourful and has lots of length.
PAIRS WELL WITH:
Mussels & French fries, Havarti, crab salad or Mac & Cheese!
Mayhem 2021 Anarchy Small Lot Sauvignon Blanc
The aromas of this wine are breathtaking, spicy, tropical with a tiny hint of oak. Great acidity and a little bit lightish. Flavours of almond, stone fruits and white peaches.
Small Lot, Barrel aged
Hand harvested on the 22nd of September from a single vineyard, the Waskiewich Vineyard on the Naramata Bench. Our hands off winemaking approach allows this Sauvignon Blanc to show off its true and best characters. The fruit was picked based on a specific flavour profile, whole bunch pressed and held on its lees for 6 months. This wine had a long, and very cool fermentation that was initially started in stainless steel before being transferred to 13% new French oak barriques and 87% seasoned French oak puncheons to complete the fermentation to dryness over a 10-week period. Maximum fermentation temperatures reached 12C which produced a wine that is very fresh and approachable
TASTING NOTES:
This very racy Sauvignon Blanc is fresh, crisp, bright, and full of flavour. It’s bone dry and shows off an array of exotic fruits such as passion fruit, mangoes, and is mineral loaded with creamy lemon grass character. A linear stream of acid closes out the finish with some grapefruit pith.
PAIRS WELL WITH:
Roast chicken, goat cheese & avocado salads, bacon wrapped scallops or oysters on the patio.

Meyer Family Vineyards
Meyer Gewürztraminer 2021
Lovely fresh floral scents of lilacs with ripe raspberry aromas. This wine was reminiscent of a French liqueur used in an aperitif called Creme de Rose, first tasted in a tiny village and it brings back many pleasant memories. I think this is partially why I think this wine is so delicious. It was dry with excellent acidity. An incredible price point.
The wine was crafted from a southwest-facing heritage block of vines planted on our estate McLean Creek Road Vineyard in 1994 with cuttings hailing from Germany. The vineyard is comprised of alluvial and glacial deposits making up a mix of gravel and sandy loam and is well-suited to this variety, allowing us to craft a beautifully aromatic, food-friendly Gewürztraminer.
2021 was the year of the heat dome and fires. While presenting some difficult and challenging times the vintage created some great ripeness and fruit flavors. Smoke was definitely an issue and is slightly noticeable in a few wines from our home vineyard. Some blocks with lower lying areas more noticeable then the southern facing blocks with lots of slope.
The wines were tested for smoke taint and some have come in right on the edge of what is deemed to be perceptible. If you have a good nose you may pick this up in some wines and not be able to tell at all in others. We recommend pairing these wines with some Gouda or smoked salmon for some amazing pairings
Because the vintage was lower yield, this wine is limited to 6 bottles per purchase.

Rich, intense with dark ripe fruit aromas. Suggestive of mellowness, pepper, pipe tobacco. The rich smooth ripe fruit continues on the palate. Tannins are light, excellent expression of Pinot Noir. This is a superb wine, soft with perfect acidity.
An indirect quotation of Winemaker Benoit: The wine is in it’s prime, and will continue to plateau for a few more years.

Play Estate Winery
Play 2020 Sauvignon Blanc
Tasty oak scents, toasted marshmallows, floral. The wine is very light with a slight oak flavour, pleasant with lighter fruits.
VINTAGE NOTES
A late start to summer, blanketing the vineyards with the heat we expect from the Okanagan sun. Softer days in an ideal fall made up for the intense heat of August, allowing for slightly smaller berries to ripen with complex flavours. The bright, sunny September allowed for our Sauvignon Blanc to ripen perfectly.
WINEMAKING & WINE PROFILE
Sauvignon Blanc is one of our flagship wines and I’m delighted to be able to craft this one in a style I enjoy so much. High acid and fruit forward, reminiscent of a New Zealand style while incorporating French barrel aging and batonnage to provide a rounded, fuller mouthfeel. – Stephanie Bryers, Winemaker
Stag’s Hollow Winery
Stag’s Hollow 2021 Tragically Vidal
Wonderful fruity scents, candy, birthday cake. Delicious ripe scents. Wow, the palate follows the nose with an intense acidity with spice and pepper.
The 2021 Tragically Vidal is slightly more tropical on the nose than the previous vintage but still perfumed with its classic orchard fruit, orange blossom and honey. The palate is full of ripe stone fruit, pineapple, melon, dried mango, bergamot and candied ginger. A lush, generous, and textural mouthfeel with an abundance of bright, acidity to balance the gentle nudge of residual sugar.
Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
This year’s Tragically Vidal is an absolute delight on the nose. Perfumed notes of apple blossom and honeysuckle mingle with ripe tropical and orchard fruit notes; it’s like walking through an Okanagan orchard in the middle of August. The palate is full of ripe stone fruit, apples, pears and citrus, with a slight arrowroot biscuity note. A generous mouthfeel with an abundance of bright acidity to balance the gentle nudge of residual sugar.
Vineyard Notes
Stag’s Hollow Vineyard – Okanagan Falls (gravels & course glacial till) Parsons Vineyard – Okanagan Falls Shuttleworth Creek Vineyard – Okanagan Falls (gravels, glacial till & silty loam)
Production Notes
The fruit was destemmed and lightly crushed into the press, where the juice was gently pressed off and transferred into tank. After settling for 72 hours, the clarified juice was racked into another stainless steel tank and inoculated with a select yeast culture. It enjoyed a long, slow, cool ferment, preserving as much of the aromatics as possible, before stopping it prior to sugar dryness by chilling the wine to 0°C. As we have come to do over the last few vintages of Tragically Vidal, we blended a small portion of our Orange Muscat into it, further boosting the aromatics, and giving the wine a slightly more floral direction.
Winemaker Notes
We’ve found, over the 25 years of working with Vidal, that waiting until just after the first frost to pick seems to be the sweet spot. The grape’s tough skins finally soften enough to maximize flavour and aromatic expression, and there is a slight raisining that happens in certain pockets of the vineyard, that contribute to that beautiful honeyed bouquet. This year, as with the last vintage, we also included a small amount of skin-fermented Vidal to boost textural complexity on the palate. You’ll also notice that this fan favourite has gotten a bit of a makeover this year! A fresh new label design to highlight the wine’s fun and playful nature.
Food Pairing Notes
Classic: pork, chicken, duck, fruit salads, foie gras Adventurous: Cajun/Creole dishes, Thai food, Chinese food, Vietnamese food, Mexican food, coconut curries, Indian food
Other Notes
96% Vidal, 4% Orange Muscat 630 cases produced
Stag’s Hollow 2021 Rosê
Light strawberry scents, a tiny bit musty, Yakima cherries. A perfect combination of fruit flavours. Crisp, clean, refreshing with good acidity. Another winner!
This wine is as beautiful to drink as it is to look at. The grapes, grown specifically with this wine in mind, are truly the star of the show here. Syrah lends captivating aromatics and structure to this rosé each year. It seems absolutely crazy to me that more Okanagan wineries aren’t taking advantage of the grape’s delicate side in this way. In the cellar, we intervene as minimally as possible, and by doing so, we’re able to achieve a really harmonious and varietally-expressive rosé.
Varietal: Syrah
Tasting Notes
Aromas of wild strawberries and cream jump out of the glass, and are joined by a burst of ripe watermelon, grapefruit, and white pepper. The palate is refreshingly dry and satisfyingly savoury. Delicate in colour, perhaps, but not without substance; this rosé is mouth-filling and textural, with juicy acidity and a gentle tannin structure that bring both balance and focus to the wine.
Vineyard Notes
Amalia Vineyard, Osoyoos West Bench (Sandy loam) – Syrah
Production Notes
Our dedicated rosé blocks were hand-harvested, sorted, destemmed and pressed immediately; minimizing maceration time as much as possible. The pale juice was transferred gently into a stainless steel tank, where it was cold settled for 48 hours, and then racked, warmed and inoculated with a selected yeast strain. The ferment was kept cool (under 13C) in order to maximize aromatic expression, and was racked and chilled upon completion. The wine was then stabilized, filtered and bottled.

Our Palate-Pleasing Blend of Sunshine
Blend: Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Blanc BC VQA Okanagan Valley
Vintage & Winemaking Notes: After a mild winter, the 2021 growing season got underway with early bud break followed by timely fruit set. 2021 will be remembered as a very hot year with record-breaking temperatures in late June. Less frequent cooler nights coupled with the heat led to efforts to retain acidity in the grapes by picking earlier. While yields were somewhat impacted by the exceptional temperatures, phenolic ripeness was more easily achieved in the grapes harvested.
The grapes for our 2021 Autumn Gold were harvested in September and October upon each variety reaching full maturity and excellent ripeness. They were processed separately and aged for 5 months before being blended to create our flagship wine. The assemblage of Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Blanc combines beautiful
aromatics, texture and acidity in this signature wine.
Food Pairings: Pair with grilled salmon, seared tuna, pan fried dumplings, or roasted poultry.
Wild Goose 2019 Pinot Noir *
Slightly paler in colour, a light taste but very good. Light tannins, nice acidity, smooth. Good for those white wine lovers transitioning into reds. Nice for pairing with poultry and lighter fare.
Wild Goose Frisch Sparkling *
Crisp and fresh with nice acidity. Herbaceous notes on the nose.

The grapes for our inaugural 2021 vintage of Frisch were harvested upon each variety reaching full maturity. Picking dates ranged across September and October because of the different locations of the vineyards. They were processed separately and each aged for 4 ½ months. The wine was blended with the intent of creating a fun and fresh wine. The wine was filtered and stabilized before being placed in a Brite (pressure vessel) tank to be carbonated and finally canned in March 2022
