OpenTable Releases its Annual List of Canada’s 100 Most Popular
Outdoor Dining Restaurants Ahead of Victoria Day Long Weekend
Canadians embrace outdoor dining as early as January 1
according to new OpenTable data
OpenTable is marking the unofficial start of summer with the release of its annual list of 100 Most Popular Outdoor Dining Restaurants ahead of the May 22 Victoria Day long weekend. While the list debuts just in time for patio season, OpenTable data shows that outdoor dining is a year round activity for Canadians, with seated reservations happening as early as January 1 this year in cities including Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary.
This year’s Outdoor Dining list, curated by analyzing over one million reviews left by OpenTable diners, features establishments from five provinces. Ontario has 59 restaurants featured, followed by British Columbia (21), Quebec (9), Alberta (7) and Atlantic Canada (4).
The list features some of the most picturesque alfresco dining destinations coast-to-coast, including 2022 returning favourites:
- Allen’s in Toronto, featuring a chic wood adorned terrace with complimentary greenery.
- Vancouver’s Provence Marinaside, overlooking scenic False Creek.
- Bonterra Trattoria in Calgary, that transports guests to a picturesque Italian terrazzo.
- In addition to returning fan favourites, there’s plenty of newcomers joining the list, including:
- Oretta Midtown in Toronto, featuring a pretty-in-pink patio.
- Montréal’s Maison Boulud with an enchanting outdoor garden.
- LIFT Bar Grill View in Vancouver with harbour and coastal mountain views.
“April dining was up 4% in Canada YoY, likely a result of warmer temperatures and Canadians enjoying an early start to outdoor dining,” said Matt Davis, Country Director, OpenTable Canada. “Find a new favourite spot for patio season by exploring our list of the 100 Most Popular Outdoor Dining Restaurants, or by using our outdoor seating filter.”
New OpenTable data reveals Canadians’ favourite (most booked) cuisines to enjoy whilst dining outside in 2022, and the top five are:
- Italian food takes the top spot, with options such as LUPO Italian Ristorante & Patio in Calgary and Alessa Trattoria in Montreal.
- Canadian cuisine holds second place, including restaurants like Drift in Atlantic Canada and River Café in Calgary.
- Third place is Steakhouse, with options like The Boathouse at Kits Beach in Vancouver and Arôme – Casino du Lac Leamy in Ottawa.
- Seafood is fourth, served at spots like The Sandbar Waterfront Grill in Toronto and Finn’s Seafood, Chops and Cocktails in Vancouver.
- American cuisine holds fifth place, found at Earls Kitchen + Bar – Ambleside in Vancouver and Stillwaters Plate and Pour in Toronto.

The 100 Most Popular Outdoor Dining Restaurants In Canada for 2023 is generated from more than 1 million reviews collected from verified OpenTable diners between March 1, 2022 and February 28, 2023. All restaurants with a minimum “overall” score and number of qualifying reviews were included for consideration. The overall score is made up of unique data points, such as overall diner rating, user klout, total number of reviews, and regional overall rating. Qualifying restaurants were then scored and sorted according to the percentage of reviews, for which “Outdoor Dining” was selected as a special feature.
