The Vancouver Symphony Celebrates
New Music by BC Composers at Jean
Coulthard Readings
The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) is proud to present the Jean Coulthard Readings, a free event that celebrates the talent and creativity of six early-career composers from BC. The event will take place on Tuesday, May 30 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Orpheum.
Named after one of BC’s most celebrated composers, the Jean Coulthard Readings gives aspiring composers the invaluable chance to have their works read, workshopped, and performed by a professional orchestra. This year’s jury-selected participants are: Darren Xu, Holly Winter, Judah Williams, Luc Faris, Mariah Mennie, and Wylie Ferguson.
The event will be hosted and conducted by RBC Assistant Conductor David Bui, who will lead the VSO in reading and performing pieces by each composer. This year’s event is the culmination of the newly-expanded Jean Coulthard Readings and Mentorship Program, which offers participants a comprehensive learning experience throughout the VSO season with access to rehearsals, seminars, and workshops with VSO musicians, and opportunities to learn from VSO-commissioned composers such as Vivian Fung, Marcus Goddard, and Rita Ueda.
Now in its 26th year, the Jean Coulthard Readings is a unique opportunity for the public to witness the dynamic process of orchestral music creation and support the next generation of BC composers. To register for this free event, please visit here.
The Jean Coulthard Readings is proudly supported by Wheaton Precious Metals.
