Countdown to the Winter Solstice – Saturday, December 21, 2024
The winter solstice marks the beginning of the astronomical season of winter in the Northern Hemisphere and is the day with the fewest hours of daylight in the entire year. On this day, the Sun reaches its most southerly point in the sky, giving us the darkest day of the year. There is good news, though: After the winter solstice, the Sun begins to move northward and our days once again grow longer as we inch toward the next astronomical milestone, the spring equinox in March.
