Last night, the sold out Curry Cup competition returned to Heritage Hall for a battle of the spices. Eight acclaimed chefs from across the Vancouver culinary scene faced off to determine which curry would reign supreme. The flavours of the competing curries ranged from sweet, to spicy with ingredients that were both traditional and unexpected. From the proceeds of the event, $2,000 was donated to Growing Chefs.

Along with Curry Cup winner and People’s Choice winner, top chefs from the Vancouver culinary scene stepped up to take part, namely Burdock & Co, Cook Culture, Fable Restaurant, Homer St. Cafe, Longtail Kitchen and Torafuku.

Last year’s winner, Rob Ratcliffe, Hawksworth Restaurant, returned this year as a judge along with Sonia Beeksma, Global BC, Meeru Dhalwala, Vij’s, My Shanti, Rangoli, Barbara- Jo McIntosh, Barbara -Jo’s Books to Cooks, and Mijune Pak, Follow Me Foodie. It was their expert palates that ultimately crowned chef Ma as the winner.

Emcee for the event for the third year was, Man About Town, Fred Lee. And the event featured not only curries from each competing restaurant but wine from Evolve Cellars, beer from R&B Brewing, alcoholic & non-alcoholic drink samples created by Katie Ingram, the BC Jameson Irish Whiskey champion and Bittered Sling ambassador and organic chai from The Chai Company. To cool and cleanse the palate Bella Gelateria provided lemon & matcha sorbetto and Tahitan vanilla Maui pineapple Japanese curry gelato.

Three Farmers provided nibbles for the guests as they left, along with gifts for the judges. La Grotta del Formaggio also provide pasta and olive oil.

The Chefs’ Table Society of British Columbia invites everyone to save the date now for the 10th Anniversary Spot Prawn Festival on Sunday, May 15.
