Calgary businessman Paul Vickers to auction a portion of wine collection,
valued at nearly $1 million

Online bidding starts Tuesday, July 18 via Iron Gate Auctions

Paul Vickers, prominent Calgary businessman and Chairman of the Board of Penny Lane Entertainment, will auction a portion of his personal wine collection featuring 360 lots, valued at just under $1 million CAD, via Iron Gate Auctions. As owner of Cowboys Dance Hall, Vickers is a key player in annual Calgary Stampede celebrations and The Incredible Collection of Paul Vickers online auction will go live on Tuesday, July 18, just as the Stampede winds down. The wine auction catalogue is now available for preview.

“I’ve been an avid wine collector for many years and I’ve come to realize that I can’t possibly enjoy all these fantastic wines in my lifetime, so it’s time to share them,” said Vickers. “I’m also excited that an online auction format means these wines can reach broader, more diverse audiences who are keen to access some of the greatest wines of our time.”

Throughout his career in the hospitality business, Vickers has visited the world’s most prestigious chateaux and wine estates, purchasing wines for his personal collection at source. As a result, his collection has impeccable provenance; a critical factor in retaining value. The wines have been stored in optimal conditions in Vickers’s home cellar equipped with professional temperature and humidification systems. This combination of prestige, quality and provenance is considered by experts as the trifecta of wine cellar management.

Nearly half of The Incredible Collection of Paul Vickers auction catalogue is represented by Grand Cru Classé Bordeaux along with a vast number of California cult wines and some highly sought-after Burgundy including an impressive offering of the rare Domaine de la Romanée Conti to name a few. Highlights and their corresponding high estimates include:

Lot 2: three bottles of 1982 Chateau Lafite Rothschild (750mL) valued at $7,200
Lot 6: a double magnum of 1989 Chateau Mouton Rothschild (3000mL) valued at $4,200
Lot 8: six bottles of 1990 Chateau d’Yquem Sauternes (750mL) valued at $4,700
Lot 18: three bottle horizontal of 1991 Domaine de la Romanée Conti Echezeaux, La Tache and Richebourg (750mL) valued at $20,000

“Single owner auctions like The Incredible Collection of Paul Vickers are a fantastic, and still quite rare, opportunity for buyers in Canada to access wines that are in pristine condition and otherwise unavailable,” said Warren Porter, Founder and President of Iron Gate Wine. “But we’re at a pivotal moment for Canada’s emerging secondary wine market where consignors who’ve held on to their collections for a lifetime and buyers who are eager to jump in both see tremendous opportunity. It’s an exciting time and we anticipate steady growth.”

Founded in 2004, Iron Gate has emerged as the market leader in Fine Wine auctions in Canada and is the only national auction house dedicated solely to the sale of Fine Wine and Spirits.
