For only the second time in their history the extraordinary wine tasting event Gambero Rosso – tre bicchieri World Tour came to Vancouver. In 2014 Vancouver was their only stop in Canada.
This event is dedicated to presenting the best Italian wines. Launched in 1988, along with the first Gambero Rosso guide to Italian wine, Vini d’italia, it has been expanding in recent years and takes place in major cities throughout the world.
The purpose of the tour is to introduce the wine trade and wine media to Italian wines that have been rated using a “blind tasting” by independent wine experts.
- Three glasses indicate “extraordinary wines” ***
- Two red glasses indicates a wine which was selected as a candidate for three glasses , but did not make it all the way. This feature was introduced in 2002 ++
- Two glasses indicate “very good wines” **
- One glass indicates “good wines” *
The ratings are subjective of course and what is considered “good wine” when compared to other Italian wines is a wine that when compared to all wines is still an “excellent” wine.
The point of course is to introduce these excellent wines to a potential wine buying market. In the case of British Columbia, where wine sales and availability is tightly controlled, not all wines on the tour are available to purchase.
The tre bicchieri tour is so prestigious that it is a testament to the taste and sophistication of the wine buyer in British Columbia especially given that our market share is less than the biggest market in Canada, that being Ontario.
I will include here wines that have an agent and are available in British Columbia. Most, but not all, will be available in either the government stores or specialty stores. Some wines that are not available for retail purchase may be on the wine lists of better restaurants. Listed alphabetically by winery with the region noted. I have not included prices as these might vary, and to be expected the prices will be wide ranging.
