The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra is making the final preparations to welcome 90 participants for the 2017 VANCOUVER SYMPHONY ORCHESTRAL INSTITUTE AT WHISTLER. The immersive, ten-day training program returns to the Resort Municipality of Whistler for a third year, where Rising Stars of the classical music world will share this unique opportunity to live and perform in a spectacular natural setting. The VSO is pleased to acknowledge a new partnership with STINGRAY MUSIC in support of activities at the VSOIW.
Through its Rising Stars program, STINGRAY MUSIC has generously supported tuition scholarships, and sponsored masterclasses and coaching sessions for chamber music and orchestral performances by the young musicians of the Whistler Institute Orchestra. “Contributing to the career advancement of up-and-coming artists and their breakthrough into new markets is one of Stingray’s core values. The inspiring talent of Canadian artists make them true ambassadors of our creativity. Stingray wishes to tangibly participate in their success. It is therefore with enthusiasm that we renew every year our commitment by presenting Stingray Rising Stars awards at numerous events across the country,” said Mathieu Péloquin, Senior Vice-President, Marketing and Communications of Stingray.
The VSOIW offers young musicians from 15 to 25 years of age an experience and education like no other, joining together the GRAMMY® and JUNO Award-winning VSO with Whistler, one of the world’s finest mountain resorts. Students will be immersed in a collaborative musical environment alongside and mentored by a world class symphony orchestra, under the direction of the VSO’s internationally acclaimed music director, Maestro Bramwell Tovey. Participation in two performances of the Whistler Institute Orchestra, chamber music, instrumental coachings, as well as a variety of unique performance opportunities will fill students’ warm summer days and cool, refreshing evenings in the mountains of beautiful British Columbia in Canada. The VSO is grateful for the partnership with the Resort Municipality of Whistler and the Province of British Columbia.
The participants are coached by musicians drawn from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. All faculty members are outstanding performers and teachers with diverse backgrounds in orchestral and chamber music. Beginning on Friday June 30 locations thoughout the village of Whistler will feature VSOIW performances, including the Audain Arts Museum, Town Plaza Gazebo, Maury Young Arts Centre, Roundhouse Lodge, and Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre. The VSO itself will perform two evening concerts on Canada Day weekend, July 1 & July 2, at 8:30pm in Whistler’s Olympic Plaza.
The culmination of all this activity will be performances by the Whistler Institute Orchestra, of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol and Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 in A Minor.
