M8 Turns Up the Heat for Peak Summer
Yaletown Chinese-Italian Bistro Launches Newly Renovated Waterfront Patio, Seasonal Food & Cocktail Menus
Nestled under the Burrard Bridge along the Yaletown Seawall, M8 restaurant (pronounced “mate”) is a true marriage of Chinese and Italian culinary traditions. One of the latest additions to Vancouver’s waterfront dining roster, it melds the family heritage of Chef-Owner, Xin Mao with an impressive amount of Italian culinary experience.
Originally from China’s historic city of Luoyang in the province of Henan, Xin dropped his studies in International Trade to follow his passion at Art Institute’s Culinary program, eventually moving up the lines at such notable Italian eateries as CinCin and Cioppino’s, before opening Richmond’s critically-acclaimed MoMa Bistro in 2014.
Fitted with plush teal banquettes, angular gold-veined mirrored panels, whimsical re-imagined Chinese Opera artwork, Venetian plaster accents and bold brass-and-natural-marble light fixtures by local designer Randy Zeiber, M8’s 60-seat dining room balances laid-back comfort with high style, thanks to award-winning designer Negar Reihani of Space Harmony.
But, with summer now at its zenith, Chef Xin has released new High Summer food and cocktail menus in celebration of the recently completed, 30-seat patio that takes full advantage of the restaurant’s singular waterfront location.
The menu includes such dishes as Signature Shimeiji Mushroom Tempura (based on a recipe handed down by Chef Xin’s grandfather); Crispy Duck, prepared Peking Duck-style with a soybean cassoulet; a Tiger Prawn Bucatini that reimagines a traditional san xian dumpling within an Italian context; and an umami-forward dish of Tender Beef Cheeks served with a secret Kung Pao sauce, the perfect complement to breathtaking views of False Creek, the Granville Bridge and Granville Island.
Dishes are complemented by an equally adventurous cocktail menu, which includes such terrace-friendly tipples such as the Green Tea Cooler (Lillet, Green Tea, Citrus, Osmanthus, Orange Blossom) and the Baijiu Sour of the Season which adds a traditional Chinese spirit to the Bourbon-forward classic.
M8’s east-facing patio is now open Tuesday to Sunday for Lunch, Happy Hour, Dinner and weekend Brunch service.
