Valentine’s Day brings to mind thoughts of Romance, Passion and Love. These wines express those emotions and thoughts that evoke our sense of wonder. Whether you subscribe to the darker version of the two Roman martyrs who later became saints, or to the gentler versions of Chaucer and Shakespeare, the enduring thought is wine will always be our romance, passion and love. Here we offer three wines for your Valentine that we think embody those sentiments.
ROMANCE.
2019 Chardonnay
“Whether an old relationship or new, sparks are created when a good bottle of wine is shared, which makes everything more romantic, more memorable.”
A fruit driven Chardonnay full of ripe peach, mango, banana, papaya and lemon sherbet fruit with layers of nut, popcorn, caramel and vanillin oak. Full bodied and rich on the palate with crisp acidity and flavours of exotic tropical fruit, white peach, poached pear and fresh notes of lemon zest and grapefruit mixing with the toasty oak, shortbread and custard. Try this with a mild butter chicken or Dungeness Crab drenched in butter. – Rhys Pender, Master of Wine
PASSION.
2019 Athene
“Passion is a wonderful word to describe the time, work and sacrifices that go into making our Burrowing Owl Estate Athene, and the joy we experience when it all comes together in a bottle of wine. Enjoying wine is a time for being together and sharing this passion.”
Tasting Notes:
A riper style Pinot Noir with an intense nose showing black cherry and dried plum along with paprika, earth, coffee and vanilla along with some complex potpourri and gamy, meaty notes. The medium-bodied palate is balanced with crisp, juicy acidity and shows dried cherry and raspberry, blueberry, violets and chocolate and lots of the spice and savoury notes of paprika, sage, earth and leather. Pair this with grilled chorizo sausages or a sundried tomato pasta sauce. – Rhys Pender, Master of Wine
LOVE.
2018 Meritage
The 2018 Burrowing Owl Estate Meritage brings together the characteristics of five grape varieties to create a beautiful blend, that like true love, has a complexity and intensity that is greater than the sum of its parts. Like a good marriage, it matures with age, is built to last, and grows finer.
Tasting Notes:
A complex and intense nose of dried herbs, wild sage, red and black currant, cedar and black plum with hints of licorice that nicely combines savoury and dark fruit notes. The dry, full-bodied palate with firm, grippy tannins, is built to last and the flavours of vanilla, toasty oak, cassis, mixed berries, pie crust and clove lead into a long, mineral graphite finish. Pair this with grilled venison loin with pink peppercorn demi-glace or rosemary and paprika spiced sausages. — Rhys Pender, Master of Wine
All five grape varieties were harvested by hand from Burrowing Owl Estate Winery’s vineyards in October and November. They were vinified and barrel-aged separately for 15 months before being blended together. The top barrels of single varietal wine are selected from our vineyard block wines for this blend. After the components are combined, they are barreled for another three and a half months to achieve their full integration. The wine was then bottled and left to mature further in a temperature-controlled environment before its release.
Blend: 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc, 10% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec
