Nestled in Vancouver Island’s Cowichan Valley, Blue Grouse Estate Winery is one of BC’s oldest wineries and among the pioneers of modern Island winemaking.

Viticulturist John Harper planted an experimental vineyard on the property in 1977, trialling more than 150 grape varieties, some of which are still in production today. The Kiltz family purchased the vineyard in 1988 and released the first wines under the Blue Grouse label in 1990, using rejuvenated vines from the original plantings. Paul Brunner took ownership in 2012, helping establish Blue Grouse as a leading producer of cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In 2022, the winery was purchased by members of California’s Jackson family, who continue to build on that direction. Winemaker Stacy Hornemann joined the winery in 2024.

The estate, which opened its tasting room in 1992, has become a popular destination in the Cowichan Valley. The setting is peaceful, overlooking vineyards and forested hills, with a relaxed atmosphere that encourages visitors to linger. The renovated Grouse House now offers “Bed & Bottle” accommodation on the property.
Cowichan Valley’s maritime climate shapes the wines. Mild winters and the moderating influence of the Pacific Ocean allow for a long, even growing season, producing wines with bright acidity, moderate alcohol, and fresh, delicate fruit character. These are food-friendly wines that pair naturally with local seafood and casual West Coast dining.
A visit to the region can easily include a hike on the Kinsol Trestle or Mount Prevost, or visits to the BC Forest Discovery Centre, a stop at the Duncan Farmers’ Market, and a tasting at Blue Grouse. While walk-ins are welcome, reservations are recommended during busy periods.
