“In this series I will be reviewing wines shared with friends”
From time to time I am the fortunate recipient of wines sent to me for review. It is especially nice to share these wines with friends. Not only does it make for lively conversation, and often diverse opinions, but it also makes for a very enjoyable occasion. So thanks to my wine loving friends who join me from time to time for a glass of wine.
“The road to a friend’s house is never long.” This is especially true when the purpose of the visit is to discover the secrets of a new wine, enjoy a delicious meal prepared by our friends and hosts for the evening. So, along with good food and good company, we enjoyed good wine.
The wine I was sharing with friends is the Mennucci Vini d’Italia Colonna 1557 Roma Rosso DOC
Taste the simple finesse
Colonna 1557 Roma Rosso DOC 2020
Colonna 1557 Roma Rosso DOC is the expression of one of the most important historical territories and of ancient winemaking traditions. This wine has a ruby red color, the nose denotes of ripe red fruit with spicy notes. In the mouth it is balanced, dry and lightly tannic. Colonna 1557 Roma Rosso DOC goes perfectly with red meats, cheese and cured meats.
Blend: Montepulciano, Sangiovese & Cesanese
Vinification: Maceration with pumping over and punching down for about 20 days, at a temperature-controlled fermentation.
Maturation: Stainless steel tanks and wood.
Colur: Intense ruby red color
Nose: The nose denotes of ripe red fruit with spicy notes.
Mouth: In the mouth it is balanced, dry and lightly tannic
Pairing: Perfect with red meats, cheese and cured meats.
In a word: Delicious! This is a bold, juicy, ripe wine that is best savoured. The Colonna 1557 Roma Rosso DOC was enjoyed by all four of us, something that doesn’t always happen. Sometimes a wine is too bold but in this case the complexity of the wine captured both lovers of a rich wine and lovers of a more refined wine.
Ruby red and dark in the glass giving you a promise of what is to come on the palate.
Wonderful scents of dark fruits, especially the beloved wild blackberries fresh from the vine, followed by Italian plum with just the right touch of a fine pipe tobacco. Balanced, dry with perfect acidity. Hints of spice and black pepper notes. This wine is heaven to the nose.
Following the nose to the palate, the wine is rich and smooth with excellent texture in the mouth. Tannins are approachable and slightly lighter in depth. Although the wine was a perfect pairing with the pasta dish it is also elegant and quite drinkable on its own.
The unique bottle shape isn’t the only thing that sets this wine apart, the award winning wine from the Lazio region is in a class of its own.
The wine was decanted for about four hours, was then placed in the refrigerator for thirty minutes, removed from the refrigerator and left at room temperature for the next 30 minutes, just prior to serving.
